Grant snapped his suitcase closed and carried it downstairs, where he went in search of Tracey. He found her in the kitchen. Stephanie and Tracey were in the process of making cookies. Kimberly sat in her high chair, banging a rattle against the tray.

“I guess I’d better be going.” Grant couldn’t exactly put into words what he felt when he walked into the room and saw Tracey with his daughters—as if she belonged there.

As if she’d always belonged there.

Tracey turned toward him. “Oh. Wait.” She grabbed a bag from the counter and handed it to Stephanie.

“We made you cookies, Daddy,” Stephanie announced, and gave him a proud smile.

“Well, aren’t I a lucky guy,” Grant remarked, then hugged and kissed her. “I’ll be back in a couple of days,” he promised. “Be good for Tracey while I’m gone.”

Grant nuzzled his younger daughter’s cheek and she gave him a giggle and a big smile. He picked up his suitcase, and Tracey followed him to the back door. He opened it, then turned and pulled Tracey against him, arching her back and settling her hips opposite his. They fitted together perfectly, and he liked the way it made him feel inside. Her hands rested on his chest, and he could feel the heat of her palms through his shirt.

“Give me your mouth, Trace,” he whispered. “Let me taste you one more time before I go.”

She didn’t lean toward him, but Grant saw the eagerness in her eyes as he moved closer. His lips covered hers with gentle force, sealing their mouths together, flesh against flesh, desire burning between them like red-hot coals. His tongue soared past her teeth and met hers in an erotic duel that showed her what he wanted from her in blatant sensual overtones.

“You make me burn inside,” he said, breathing heavily.

“Grant,” she whispered into his mouth.

“And you make me forget where I am,” he moaned against her lips, realizing he had to get moving or he’d miss his flight. He stepped back and let her go. His eyes studied hers for a quiet moment. “Think about it, Trace. I’ll call you later tonight.”

Tracey watched him drive away, aching to tell him what was in her heart. But she knew she never could. Grant had been open and honest with her. His heart was off-limits. He didn’t want to love again, thought he was incapable of doing so.

Tracey knew it would be wrong to put the burden of her love on his shoulders. She wondered if she would be able to live with him as his wife, knowing she would never have his heart.

The next few days seemed to crawl by. Tracey tried to concentrate on her work, knowing the deadline for her current project was fast approaching. When she wasn’t working, she found herself preoccupied with the decision of whether or not to marry Grant.

True to his promise he called every day he was gone. Their conversations usually consisted of how their time was spent during the day, a little about his job and also how the girls were doing.
